Songs In The Spirit

Song of Charity

Now, a poem most sweetly given.
Spirit, lift my thoughts to heaven,
To those happy courts above
Where angels sing most sacred songs
Of astounding love.

What is it that defeats the gloom?
Bringing gladness ere we roam?
The noise and vapors of our deeds.
The help we give to those in need
Flows upward to our heaven's home.1

Becomes the measure of our room,
Our mansions, our eternities.

And when we love as we are loved,
by One who endured all sacrifice
When we serve at any price
The perfect One whose name we claim
Charity becomes our Name.2

What treasure lives within our bones,
White as salt but little known?
Why whiteness built into our frames?3
The message - give and want no more.
We are the salt whereof Jesus spoke
"Let it pour. Let it pour."4

And when we love as we are loved,
by One who endured all sacrifice
When we serve at any price
The perfect One whose name we claim
Charity becomes our Name.

But where is our Deliverer?
Our brother, father, friend, our all?
In robes of red and flowing white
In greenest glade, in purest light,
He readies the triumphant Call.5

(Have we been generous to all?)

O Shepherd of enduring love,
At thy entrance, hearts will pound.
Love throughout the world will sound!
Greed will no more take its toll.
Our own sweet charity makes us whole6

And when we love as we are loved,
by One who endured all sacrifice
When we serve at any price
The perfect One whose name we claim
Charity becomes our Name.
